Why the Old Advice Deserves a Second Look
Most of us grew up holding a hamstring stretch for 30 seconds before gym class, convinced it was keeping our muscles safe. It's one of the most persistent habits in fitness culture — and also one of the most misunderstood. The science on pre-workout stretching has shifted considerably over the past two decades, and the evidence now tells a more nuanced story than "stretch before you exercise."
That doesn't mean stretching is bad. It means timing, type, and context all matter enormously. Understanding the difference can help you warm up smarter — and actually perform better. If you're returning to regular movement after a break, getting this right from the start is especially worthwhile.

Static stretching before a workout prevents injury.

These benefits apply regardless of how flexible a person is at baseline.

Always include some form of progressive warm-up, even if it's a brisk 5–10 minute walk or light movement specific to your workout.
The practical upshot: save the long static holds for after your workout, when muscles are already warm and pliable. That's when flexibility work is both safer and more effective. Building everyday movement habits into your routine can also support long-term flexibility without relying on pre-workout stretching sessions.
